The Book of Martyrs, by John Foxe (first published by John Day in 1563, with many subsequent editions), is an apocalyptically oriented English account of the persecutions of Protestant Christians, mainly in England, and other groups from former centuries who were the forerunners of the Protestant Reformation through whom the lineage of the church of England could be traced. Though the work is commonly known today as Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, the full title is Acts and Monuments of these Latter and Perillous Days, touching Matters of the Church. This majestic work was originally published as a multi-volume set containing thousands of pages. Today’s versions of Foxe’s Book of Martyrs don’t even deserve the title. They are all grossly and ridiculously abridged, retaining as little as 3% of this original masterpiece. Only the full text of this staggering work even begins to do justice to the tens of thousands of people who died defending and professing God’s Word. The first part of Acts and Monuments covers early Christian martyrs, a brief history of the medieval church, including the Inquisitions, and a history of the Wycliffite of Lollard movement, as Wycliffe was deemed by men such as Foxe to be “the morning star” of the Reformation. The second part dealt with the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI, and the third with the reign of Mary. Foxe’s account of Mary’s reign and the martyrdoms that took place during it became extremely influential in the formation of an English and Protestant national identity. Foxe’s intention was to attack the Roman Catholic Church, centred primarily on the persecution under Mary Tudor, and to establish a historical justification for the foundation of the Church of England as the contemporary embodiment of the true and faithful catholic church rather than a newly invented religion or sect. This complete 8 volume edition contains much information not found in any of the liberally edited and severely shortened versions of this classic work which are in print today — in fact, most of the modern editions have left out thousands and thousands of pages. Covering martyrs from the early church through to Foxe’s day, it was one of the most influential books of the sixteenth century! On a final note, consider this: John Foxe had to write and edit this staggering work all by hand, because a typewriter hadn’t been invented yet. Imagine the tremendous effort it took. The amount of ink and paper. The cramped, tired hand. If he wrote outside, he was susceptible to distractions. If he wrote inside, he may at times have had only a flickering fire light. All for what? It took him years to complete with no guarantee that it would ever be finished, or published. All for future generations. He most likely couldn’t have conceived that the Lord would tarry at least four hundred more years. Having this book on a CD is a dream come true. A wonderful feature of this CD is the ability to “copy and paste” any of the text from its over 10,000 pages into any other computer application/program. Try doing that with a printed book!
