A 2pp. letter to ‘Dear Dr. Richardson’, 22 January 1955, small 8vo, noting that ‘I hate handwriting of any kind, even signing my name so much that I only agreed to autograph the first 25 de luxe copies but I happened to have an ordinary copy at hand so I signed it [see verso of title page] and sent it, along with the 25 de luxe copies, to the publishers… and told them to send it on to you…’ + original envelope tipped onto front pastedown. Provenance: Dr. John Kirk Richardson, Richmond, Virginia (bookplate and letter). Probably a unique copy: the edition was limited to 1200 copies, of these 25 were numbered and signed, in addition the present example was also signed by Marshall [see the letter from the author, which suggests that at the time it was signed it was unique].
